2020 has been a year marked by the global Covid19 crisis, which has not only endangered the health of the population, but citizens have seen their civil and political rights threatened and violated. The Spanish Government’s mismanagement of the crisis, which ended up turning the country into the epicentre of the pandemic in Europe, has severely affected these rights, especially in Catalonia, where the limits to the right to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression have worsened an already grim record of rights violations inflicted by Spain against the Catalan people.

In this context, the foreign branches of the Catalan National Assembly are organizing a new edition of the #CatalanWeek in preparation for the celebration of the Catalan National Day, which takes place on the 11th of September. From August 29th till September the 13th, Assemblea’s foreign branches in countries like Mexico, Portugal, England, Luxembourg, Brussels,  Germany and others will organize over 14 physical and digital events in two weeks. The #CatalanWeek focuses on fostering Catalonia’s pro-independence cause abroad, and in the current moment the country is facing, also denounce the Spain’s political repression against the people of Catalonia.

The foreign branch in Switzerland will kickstart the #CatalanWeek with an event in Zürich, followed with a virtual debate in Madrid, in Bilbao and a virtual art exhibition in Brussels. Events will also be organized by the England, Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Mexico and Luxembourg branches. The #CatalanWeek will conclude on September 13th, with a virtual debate which will discuss the work of the foreign branches, as well as the current events and future challenges of the Catalan pro-independence movement.

The foreign assemblies work at a grassroots level with local organizations, NGOs and political representatives to inform about the political situation in Catalonia. Assemblea’s foreign branches encourage anyone interested in contributing and working towards the Catalan pro-independence cause from abroad to get in touch with them, to learn more or take part in these or other events.
