Assemblea and other Catalan organisations denounce rights abuses by Spain in its Universal Periodical Review

The organisations have submitted reports of human rights violations by Spain in the context of the United Nations Universal Periodical Review of Spain

Assemblea and other civil society organisations have submitted reports to the United Nations on human rights violations committed by Spain, emphasizing abuses of civic, political, cultural and socio-economical rights.

Assemblea has joined around twenty other Catalan organisations that have shown their commitment to the defence and promotion of human rights. Among the recommendations that they have noted are a demand that the application of the Amnesty Law is guaranteed, the end of the judicialization of the conflict, and the protection of the Catalan language immersion model in education. The organisations also call for the end of the instrumentalization of the anti-terrorist legislation used to persecute activists, and of illegal espionage, ensuring there is a thorough investigation of the Catalangate spyware scandal, among other recommendations.

Last October, Assemblea and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) sent a joint submission to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as part of the fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Kingdom of Spain, taking place in May.

The report details the politicization and lack of independence of the judicial system in Spain, the criminalization of the Catalan pro-independence movement, the use of false accusations of terrorism, the abuse of the right to privacy due to illegal espionage against independence supporters and the undermining of the Catalan language in education.

The UPR is a mechanism designed to monitor how UN member states implement the Treaties they are subject to in terms of Human Rights, with the goal of addressing the concerns and to prompt the support, promotion and protection of human rights in every country.
